Penning-trap mass measurements of neutron-deficient Rb and Sr isotopes

1993

Abstract The Penning-trap mass spectrometer ISOLTRAP installed at the on-line mass separator ISOLDE 2 at CERN has been used for mass determination of 75–87 Rb and 78–83,87 Sr. Ions are captured in a Penning trap and their cyclotron frequency ω c = ( q m )B in the trapping field B is measured. Ratios of these frequencies lead to the determination of the atomic mass of these isotopes. A resolving power of typically m Δm = 10 6 and an accuracy of δm ≈10 keV is obtained. The mass of 78 Sr is measured for the first time and, in most cases, the mass values of the other isotopes are significantly improved. The experimental masses are compared with theoretical predictions.

Deceleration of antiprotons from MeV to keV energies

1993

Trapping of antiprotons for high precision measurements at the Low Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR/CERN) requires the deceleration of the antiproton beam from typically 5.8 MeV energy down to 10 keV for final capture in standard Penning traps. Two methods, the degradation of the beam in thin foils and the deceleration of the beam in an inverse cyclotron are investigated so far. The foil technique was successfully demonstrated with trapping efficiencies up to a few 10−4 and is now routinely used in the high precision measurement of the antiprotonproton mass ratio. The degradation foil method is compared with the deceleration technique using an inverse cyclotron tested also at LEAR.

A direct determination of the proton-electron mass ratio

1978

The cyclotron resonance of protons and electrons in a magnetic field of 5.7 Tesla produced by a superconducting solenoid has been measured. Protons and electrons were alternately confined in an electrostatic quadrupole trap. The quotient of the cyclotron frequencies provides a first direct determination of the proton-electron mass ratio. The result ofM p /M e =1836.1502(53) agrees with other more precise but indirect determinations of this quantity.

Measurement of thee+e−→ηJ/ψcross section and search fore+e−→π0J/ψat center-of-mass energies between 3.810 and 4.600 GeV

2015

Using data samples collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider at 17 center-of-mass energies from 3.810 to 4.600 GeV, we perform a study of e(+)e(-) -> eta J/psi and pi(0)J/psi The Born cross sections of these two processes are measured at each center-of-mass energy. The measured energy-dependent Born cross section for e(+)e(-) -> eta J/psi shows an enhancement around 4.2 GeV. The measurement is compatible with an earlier measurement by Belle.

Modelling tribimaximal neutrino mixing

2009

We model tribimaximal lepton mixing from first principles in a way that avoids the problem of the vacuum alignment characteristic of such models. This is achieved by using a softly broken A(4) symmetry realized with an isotriplet fermion, also triplet under A(4). No scalar A(4) triplet is introduced. This represents one possible realization of general schemes characterized by the minimal set of either three or five physical parameters. In the three parameter versions the neutrinoless double beta mass parameter m(ee) vanishes, while in the five parameter schemes the absolute scale of neutrino mass, although not predicted, is related to the two Majorana phases. The model realization we discus…
